“There's a sunrise and a sunset every single day, and they're absolutely free. Don't miss so many of them.”
Chilling morning air, little cloud that floats like a pink feather from some gigantic flamingo, I'm sure people have thoughts on this. Koh Samui’s beach towns wake up slowly, so early-risers can look forward to enjoying beaches with just a few local dogs and busy fishermen. For those who love bathing in the very first sunlight of a day, let Matthew Tong, a Koh Samui-based freelance photographer, share some of his favorite spots.
Sunrises at Hin Ta – Hin Yaioffer a very beautiful spectacle; the water was quite unruffled, but the motion communicated by the tides was so great that, although there was not a breath of air stirring, the sea heaved slowly with a grand and majestic motion.
Bophut - Sunrise here looks spectacular in the nature, in the photos, in the paintings, because it really is spectacular! You can say it is the most precious gold to be found on Earth. A glitter of purple and silver wonder in a vast edifice of stone and space. It paints the sky with pinks that slowly turn the colour of the clouds into peaches, cool to warm, like the progression from childhood to old age.
Sunset is the day's last loveliest smile. It is Koh Samui’s most spectacular show, whether you’re planning to take the perfect sunset photos, island excursions, a twilight proposal, or sunset dinner, follow Matthew's footprints to Nathornpier.
The sunset here never fails to impress visitors even in the most cloudy days. You can take it in a variety of ways: while running, walking, biking or simply observing. What better way to practice being aware of the present moment than by watching the literal passing of time as the sun sinks below the horizon?
The second place goes to Taling Ngam. The landscape features both the sea and mountain, and the sea in this area boasts beautiful underwater jungle of seaweeds. The dawns here are so awe that you'll no longer feel compelled to see it through a screen
In Samui, happy hour at the bar is 5:00-9:00pm but there will be no fix happy-hour for sunrise and sunset. Good news is you early-risers don't have to sleep with the roosters to know when they wake up. For January and February, dawns and sunsets usually come after 6:15. For March and April, dawns starts from 6am and sunrises come about 20 minutes after. After May, dawns will come earlier at 5:30 and sunrises starts around 6am. If beach yoga or morning walk is your thing, set off around 7 am.
For sunsets, from February to September, the sun sets around 6:30; from October to January, you will have to say goodbye to the last daylight at 6pm. If you are here for your wedding, the perfect time frame for your ceremony is 5:00pm!
